The idea of a desktop future based on an OS that's going in the direction of refusing to let you (or in Apple's case, already forbids you to) run arbitrary code they haven't given permission to, is absolutely fucking dire.
Have you looked at AVF with upstreamed pKVM? It will allow full Linux VMs with root, the low-level plumbing is present, but not yet easily exposed to users. GrapheneOS can run on Pixel tablet, and plans to support AVF/pKVM VMs, enabling many more use cases than Apple iPadOS.
